Day 1: goals & resolutions
You don’t get to dive right in quite yet. Before we dream big and create plans for what we want for the next year we have to appreciate and notice where we are coming from. This works on multiple levels.
If you come from a place of gratitude you release chemicals in your brain that make you motivated and feel good. This is where we want to come from when we are setting goals. Not deflated, defeated, and being big jerks to ourselves.
We often don’t give ourselves enough credit for all we did do. Sit with how many things you did for yourselves, others, and even just making it through this year.
Sometimes we have things that we have been avoiding that we have to sit with or let go of. Don’t ignore what comes up for you or rush through it.
You need an accurate awareness of where you are starting from. This is not about judgement, but rather accurate orientation. If you are feeling battered & bruised by 2020 that is very different from feeling energized & enthused. Neither are right or wrong and neither are permanent.
Here is your day 1 Exercise
Take up space and time. Grab a notebook, your favorite cup of tea, and a quiet space.
Turn off your phone and take off your smart watch. Seriously. I mean it.
Sit for a moment before you start writing and take a few deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. Notice sensations. What you hear, feel, smell, and see. When you feel settled in your body, mind, and space you can begin.
Write as many things down that you can think of that you are grateful for and that you have accomplished. Give yourself wild abandon to give yourself credit for everything you do for yourself, for others, and for your community. It is more than you think. Take up space and be proud. When you are done keep writing again and again. This should fill up pages of times you have reached out to a friend, shopped local, went to bed early, and didn’t attack your partner after living in a confined space for endless months. Think big, medium, and small.
When you feel like you are done just sit and be. Soak up all the things that you wrote down. Soak up your greatness. Your kindness. Your accomplishments. Don’t cut yourself short or dismiss these. You are one hell of a woman.
